Homemade Vipassana course in Micronesia
Having completed my first Vipassana 10-day course in 2018, here I present the ingredients required to create a homemade retreat as a resident on Pohnpei island in the Federated States of Micronesia.
Can you help me make this reality?
What is a Vipassana course?
Vipassana is an ancient meditation technique open equally to all — to believers of any faith, to those who don’t believe in religion at all and to those who just don’t know. During a Vipassana meditation course, participants stay at a centre to train to learn the art of living in ways which help bring positive contributions to society. Vipassana centres around the world are funded by donations and run by volunteers.
After their first course, ‘old students’ are advised to continue their practice every day by sitting for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening. Once a year they should do another Vipassana course. If students do not live near a Vipassana centre, they can create their own course by following a set timetable and having someone assist with food.
Why Micronesia?
I lived in Japan for over eight years, started meditation in 2016, and completed my first 10-day Vipassana course at the Dhamma Adicca meditation centre, Chiba in September 2018. I moved to Pohnpei in January 2019 to work at the College of Micronesia-FSM and I would like to do my annual Vipassana course — the closest centres are in Hawaii, Japan, or Thailand. It doesn’t make sense to pay thousands of dollars travelling to sit still for 12 days. With the right help, I’m sure I can find somewhere in Micronesia to do this course.
