800 Deaths a Day

A poem inspired by Bergamo artist, who meditates counting 800 people dying in Italy each day for the last four days.

800 people, 800 lives
800 husbands, 800 wives
800 families saddled with grief
Can’t hold one another — no touch for relief

Our globalised system, our virus of greed
Returns us now to our essential need
Nature cries out, brought down to her knees
We ARE nature people — the sun, earth and trees

Go out to the land now, connect with our soil
Work with our hands in community toil
Sow 800 seedlings with love for the sorrow
For the 800 more who will die tomorrow

Each of us can contribute by cultivating healthy habits, doing what we can to make todays and tomorrows better. Take care. Love.
